SONG REVIEW- SELENA GOMEZ FEAT A$AP ROCKY, GOOD FOR YOU

Let me start out by saying I’m not one for pop music. I find it generic and just reusing the same beats over and over. With that said I was pleasantly surprised with Selena Gomez’s new song “Good For You”. The song has a great R&B feel to it and quite frankly her voice is pretty seductive. I’ve never been a fan of hers but I do really like this song. It doesn’t remind me of a lot of pop songs, even though the lyrical content is pretty much the same. Rapper A$AP Rocky delivers a nice verse that isn’t coated in the hardcoreness most raps are these days. All in all for a pop song it’s a pretty good listen and while I don’t like Selena’s music if she keeps producing stuff like this, I may just have to buy her next album.

ALBUM REVIEW- FLORENCE + THE MACHINE, HOW BIG HOW BLUE HOW BEAUTIFUL

cover1200x1200

For today’s review I listened to the new Florence + The Machine CD that was released this week. I’ve always been interested in the band but never really listened to them. After hearing the album the only word that came to mind was breathtaking. The whole album is amazing and there wasn’t a song on there that didn’t have something about it I liked- the music, lyrics or both. Florence has a beautiful voice and creates a truly epic art form with her singing. This is a truly personal album filled with woeful tunes and self-loathsomeness. Florence belts her heart out pointing out all of her own flaws and being straight up when it comes to how destructive she can be in relationships. I think she brings to mind things we all think about but are scared to admit about ourselves. This album is honest and raw. The music videos are so beautiful and sad all wrapped into one, hell the album is beautiful and sad wrapped into one. “What Kind Of Man” has to be my favorite piece off of the album- the beats and lyrics are fantastic. After hearing the album I think I can say I am a fan of The Machine and will look into their other albums. I was left with so many emotions after the album and I think that’s good- as an artist you want to provoke some type of feeling into your audience, and Florence provokes many mixed-up emotions. This album is simply amazing and beautiful, one of the most honest albums I’ve heard in a while.

SONG OF THE WEEK- BLEACHERS, I WANNA GET BETTER

Bleachers_I_Wanna_Get_Better

My song of the week is a bit of a throwback, this song was released a little over a year ago- but I’ve been hooked on it all week. “I Wanna Get Better’ comes from indie-pop/rock Bleachers(a.k.a. Jack Antonoff from the successful band fun.) and is on his debut album Strange Desire which is filled with tracks resembling the 80’s, however “I Wanna Get Better” is my favorite off of the album. Bleachers has a style similar to that of David Bowie and as mentioned brings about an 80’s vibe. The album even features Yoko Ono. The fast-paced song may leave listeners wanting to dance but the lyrics are much deeper than they first appear. Lines such as “I didn’t know I was broken til I wanted to change” and “I put a bullet where I should have put a helmet” makes it clear that this guy really does wanna get better. While the lyrics are satisfying enough I do find myself jamming out the sick beats of the track on my way to school or while in the shower. “I Wanna Get Better” is an infectious, catchy tune that you can’t help but like. If you have never listened to or heard of Bleachers I advise you to take a listen, he won’t disappoint.

ALBUM REVIEW- ZELLA DAY, KICKER

download

The debut album of Zella Day is a psychedelic journey from start to finish. I first happened upon her when iTunes had her song “Hypnotic” as the single of the week. Afterwards however I lost interest in her until earlier this week I saw her new album was released. A 39 minute album filled with creative lyrics and indie beats, Kicker packs a punch that leaves listeners finding it hard not to fall in love. Her style is somewhat similar to that of Lana Del Rey- though less woeful and with far greater vocal range and themes. There isn’t one song on this album I can say I don’t like. From the heartbreaking first song “Jerome” to the gushing love song “Compass” to complete the album, Day takes her listeners on a journey into a psychedelic world where, with the lyrics, will have you looking for your soul and finding it by the end of the album. While this album is being released in early June I vote it one of the best albums of the summer.
